Cézanne and American Modernism - Phoenix Art Museum Exhibit

I went to the Cézanne exhibit at the Phoenix Art Museum.  It was awesome to see the work in person and not exclusively from a book.  His brushwork and knowledge of color -astounding.  One thought though, I would have preferred viewing his work all together in one room than mixed in with other artists that were influenced by Cézanne.   It made it more difficult to view, a lack of continuity.   A must see.

  1. Cezanne is simply... the best. Always been my favorite, since I was a kid. Though I continue to study traditional painting, I'll always come back to Cezanne as what painting is all about. What pieces did they have at the show?

  2. They had several of his still life - fruit paintings (of course), bathers, and landscapes, but what I enjoyed was the self-portrait of when he was older and some lesser known watercolor paintings. The watercolor paintings were simple and soft but very Cezanne. His mastery of color astounds. Books do not do his work justice. It reminds me of when I saw Van Gogh's works in L.A, to see the brushwork in his work was amazing.
